Nine members and two advisors of the youth group at Our Savior's participated in a 30 hour famine, starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 22 and ending at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 23. We are happy to share the following pictures with you.
Famine participants learned all about a village in Tanzania called Magole, where food and clean water are very scarce. Villagers make their homes out of mud and earth. The youth made their huts out of chicken wire, cardboard, rope, some clothespins, and a bedsheet. ![]() Participants made brooms by tying tree branches together with twine. They also made soccer balls out of plastic bags and nylons, in a similar way that soccer balls are made in Magole. A few games of soccer were actually played with one of these balls (left picture). Later on, participants were able to trade their homemade goods for trinkets and famine dollars, which were used to buy food at the famine's conclusion (right picture). ![]() There was also plenty of time for team-building activities. On the left, a youth member is successfully taped to the wall through the hard work of her teammates. On the right, a group of youth are able to stuff five people into a single shirt. Well done! ![]() When participants broke the fast at 7 p.m. on Saturday, they ate foods that are often consumed in communities such as Magole. These foods, though not the tastiest, are excellent sources of nutrition. ![]() ![]() Shortly after eating the above foods, the youth enjoyed some special treats, including pizza, cookies, and cake. ![]() ![]() We raised over $1500 for WorldVision. These funds will be used to fight hunger all over the globe. Way to go, Our Saviors Youth! |
